China’s recession slows demand for Brazilian pork
Dec, 07, 2021 Posted by Ruth HollardWeek 202147
Pork exports from Brazil to China reached a milestone in September: more than 112,000 tons were shipped, representing 30% more than the same period last year. However, over the past two months, the pace has slowed. In November, for example, the volume shipped was almost 8% lower compared to November 2020 and revenue also fell by around 15%.
“This is a serious problem, as Chinese demand is falling due to the economic downturn in the Asian country. However, Brazil has opportunities abroad to diversify its sales, especially to countries like Russia and India, which are interesting destinations”, says Celso Grisi, an economics professor at the Federal University of São Paulo (USP).
The professor comments that Brazil should think about new markets so as not to become too dependent on China, thereby avoiding what happened with the beef market when China suspended Brazilian imports for three months.
