The Chinese government has not yet given a deadline for resuming meat imports from Brazil, informed the Brazilian embassy in Beijing. According to the entity, the negotiation depends on the technical analysis of information about the “Mad Cow” cases identified on September 4th.
At the time, exports were suspended due to the protocol signed between the two countries which defined that this action is taken whenever the disease is identified.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply explained that the protocol does not define the steps for the resumption of transactions, leaving the decision to China. Among the topics under discussion with the country is the review of this procedure, informed the folder.
After 25 days of suspension, Brazil is facing difficulties in scheduling a technical meeting with the Chinese authorities. The Ministry of Agriculture says it has already submitted the request, but the other country claims that it is still analyzing the data sent.
China is the main destination for Brazilian meat, according to ABIEC (the Brazilian meat-exporting industry association).
Mad Cow cases
The two cases of mad cow disease identified by the Ministry of Agriculture occurred earlier this month in Belo Horizonte (MG) and Nova Canaã do Norte (MT).
Both were later confirmed as atypical contamination, which occurs by a genetic mutation and, therefore, does not indicate infection of the entire herd.
The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE), which was notified by the Ministry of Agriculture, concluded that the two cases do not pose a risk to the country’s beef production chain.
The cases did not cause Brazil to lose its classification as a country with an insignificant risk for the disease.
