Chinese imports stand in the way of Brazilian pork exporters’ goals

Brazilian pork exports will hardly reach the 1.137 million tonnes and R$ 2.6 billion in revenue levels seen in 2021, in large part due to decreased Chinese imports.
They may, though, reach “near levels,” according to the assessment of the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), after finding that September sales exceeded 100 thousand tonnes, the same average in the third quarter witnessed last year.
Even so, the share of Brazilian pork exports in the international market remains below expectations since the beginning of the year – despite the gradual recovery in both volume and value, wrote Ricardo Santin, president of the entity, in a note released on Sept. 5.
In September, the volume of shipments reached 102.7 thousand tonnes, down 8.5% from September 2021. The revenue earned in September was R$ 244.3 million, down 4.5%.
See below the track record of the volume of pork (HS code 0203) exported by Brazil between January 2019 and August 2022. The data is from DataLIner.

Despite satisfactory increases to destinations such as Chile, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Angola, the 12.1% drop in exports to mainland China to 46,900 tonnes remains the Achilles heel of pork exports this year.
