The city government of Madre de Deus, in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador, has issued a legal notice to Transpetro and Acelen, the companies responsible for fuel supply in the state. This action comes after an oil spill recorded near the Maritime Terminal in Bahia on Saturday morning (24).
According to the municipal body, the companies have been given a 72-hour deadline to provide detailed information about the cause, product type, and potential damages resulting from the leak. They are also required to explain the measures taken to address the issue.
G1 contacted Transpetro, which confirmed it received the notification, saying that a response will be issued within the specified period. Acelen, being the owner of the asset, was also notified, as confirmed by their advisory.
In a statement released on Sunday (25), Transpetro reported that the leak of “oily water” into the sea occurred due to a pipeline issue, which was contained on the same day. Approximately 20 liters of oil were spilled at the location.
According to the city hall, the incident did not impact the city’s beaches; however, fishermen discovered dead fish and other marine animals in the vicinity of where the accident happened
Mitigation measures
Immediate actions were taken by Transpetro employees, who arrived at the site on Saturday to initiate the cleanup process.
A photo provided by the city hall shows a barrier placed to prevent the further spread of the oil. The barrier is scheduled to be removed on Friday (30). The site will continue to be monitored.
On Tuesday, a biologist and specialist in Environment and Water Resources from INEMA, Rodrigo Stolze, visited the area to evaluate the damage. Further details regarding the biologist’s analysis have not been disclosed by the city hall.
