CODEBA and AMG are exploring the idea of allowing smaller ships to berth at the Port of Aratu-Candeias

The engineering team at the Companhia das Docas do Estado da Bahia (CODEBA), the port authority in charge of the state’s main ports, has conducted studies in collaboration with AgĂȘncia Maritima Granel (AMG) to make the berthing of smaller vessels at the liquid bulk terminal (TGL in Portuguese) of the Port of Aratu-Candeias viable, with the goal of reducing restrictions and, as a result, increasing handling rates in the port’s area.
The initiative originated from the necessity of finding an alternative to the berthing of the CETO vessel in the TLG. The ship, loaded with 5,500 tons of acrylonitrile, was unable to berth as planned because the distance between the fenders positioned in the terminal, both in the NORTH and SOUTH berths, was greater than the vessel’s perpendicular body.
On the occasion, it was decided to use a crane to move a mobile pneumatic fender between the conical trunk fenders in the northern part of the South berth, ensuring that the ship docked safely at the pier.
The findings of the studies will contribute to vessels of similar size being able to dock in more agile and dynamic ways, resulting in a reduction in the final cost of products, a reduction in the value of maritime freight, and an improvement in the financial balance of CODEBA-controlled ports.
