The Bahia Port Authority (CODEBA) launched a maintenance dredging operation at Ilhéus Port this Friday (14th), marking a significant milestone for the port infrastructure and logistics in southern Bahia. The project, which received an investment of approximately R$20 million, underwent strict procedures to ensure navigational safety, operational efficiency, and environmental sustainability.
Since the dredger’s arrival on January 29, several steps have been completed, including training vessel commanders, a requirement by the Brazilian Navy to ensure navigation safety. Additionally, pre-dredging sediment collection was conducted to prevent any negative environmental impact. The operation is also subject to strict technical oversight, including bathymetric surveys to update the volume of material to be dredged, ensuring precision and efficiency.
The primary goal of the dredging project is to maintain the port’s full navigability, expand its capacity to accommodate larger vessels—from 30,000 to 45,000 tons—reduce operational costs and ensure the safety of ships using the docking infrastructure for both coastal and long-haul cargo transportation.
Environmental preservation is a top priority in this process. The dredging plan was thoroughly studied and approved by regulatory bodies such as IBAMA, which established guidelines to minimize ecological impact. Measures include continuous monitoring of marine fauna and flora before, during, and after the operation and the proper disposal of dredged sediments.
“This commitment to sustainability positions Ilhéus Port as an example of balancing economic development with environmental preservation, a crucial equilibrium to ensure the region continues to grow without compromising its natural resources,” said CODEBA’s CEO, Antonio Gobbo.
