Bahia state port company Codeba has committed to a low-carbon economy by adopting resilient and effective socio-environmental and governance practices, leading to its membership in the ICLEI network – Local Governments for Sustainability. ICLEI is a global organization with around 2,500 local and regional governments dedicated to sustainable urban development. Active in over 125 countries, the network influences sustainability policies and drives local action for low-carbon, nature-based, equitable, resilient, and circular development.

Joining ICLEI will provide Codeba with access to a global network of knowledge, resources, and partnerships aimed at promoting sustainable practices. ICLEI seeks opportunities that positively impact people’s quality of life and prosperity while maintaining environmental balance. Over nearly three decades, ICLEI has developed, tested, and expanded methodologies to guide sustainable development.

The membership, celebrated at the 3rd ICLEI National Meeting held in São Paulo last week, will elevate the national and international profiles of the ports of Salvador, Aratu-Candeias, and Ilhéus. This partnership will facilitate the implementation of sustainability initiatives at these ports. The work will commence in the first week of July with a visit from ICLEI experts to Bahia, a state with the longest coastline in the country, stretching 1,100 kilometers.

SYNERGY

Codeba sponsored the ICLEI World Congress, which brought together climate experts and environmental specialists from around the globe. “The synergy was complete and will yield positive results for the three Bahia ports under our management. I am thrilled to contribute to this paradigm shift in public docks in Bahia, which are poised to take a significant step toward decarbonization and sustainability. The maritime sector has great growth potential, and Bahia will greatly benefit from the enhanced cargo transport mode in harmony with sustainability,” said Antonio Gobbo, CEO of Codeba.

Rodrigo Perpétuo, Executive Secretary of ICLEI South America since 2016, shares Gobbo’s enthusiasm regarding the strategic partnership with Codeba, noting that the timing of the membership is ideal. “We highlighted several global trends at the congress, including the relationship between coastal cities and ports,” he emphasized.

“Announcing Codeba’s affiliation with ICLEI at our most important international event underscores the strategic significance of this partnership,” Perpétuo said. He added that the goal is to support the three ports in their climate and ESG actions, providing a pioneering and innovative model that can be replicated in other port complexes in Brazil and worldwide.

CODEBA

Bahia boasts one of the largest port complexes in Brazil, comprising the public ports of Salvador, Aratu-Candeias, and Ilhéus, along with five Terminals of Private Use (TUPs). This network forms part of the Port System of All Saints Bay, which includes the Aratu-Candeias/Salvador port and the TUPs of Petrobras (Temadre and the Gasification Terminal), Ford, Dow Chemical, Moinho Dias Branco, and Gerdau (Usiba).

Individually, the three berths rank among the busiest in the Northeast. According to the 2023 ranking by the National Waterborne Transport Agency (Antaq), the Port of Aratu-Candeias is the third busiest public berth in the region, handling 6,683,832 tons. The Port of Salvador follows in fourth place with 4,677,084 tons, and Ilhéus ranks tenth with 527,675 tons.
