Codeba port authority to install ‘toll’ at the Port of Salvador

At the close of 2022, Bahia state port authority Codeba wants to increase the number of vacancies in the sorting yard of the Port of Salvador by imposing a charge, which, in turn, is worrying the state’s productive sector more than the number of vehicles in queue. During peak seasons, an additional area next to the yard is designated to handle the excess volume. However, Codeba opted to launch a competition to create a space outside the port area, whose use will be mandatory and imply an additional charge.
Discontent is widespread because cargo owners already pay fees to Codeba. The toll would represent another expense for using the port.
The fear of those who depend on the Port of Salvador to ship their cargo is that, by moving the sorting activity to an external area whose use will be mandatory, they will have to pay for higher freight, spend more on fuel, and endure the deterioration of port-city relations, in addition to paying for the extra service.
In addition, the logistical detour could pose dynamic urban problems that do not exist today, for example, increased traffic.
One of the justifications presented by the port authority is that the new space would increase the comfort of drivers by offering restaurants/diners, tire shops, rest areas, etc.
The problem is that 80% of the cargo comes from origins or is destined to places 60 km from the port, with short journeys that take an average of 2 hours. As a result, most drivers will not make a stop unless it is absolutely required.
Many are legally questioning this solution that, for them, seems much more like a problem.
