Coffee export volume fell in January although revenue landed records

Brazilian coffee shipments totaled 3.2 million 60-kilogram bags in January, an 11.8% decrease from the same month in 2021, according to the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Council (Cecafé). According to the report, the shipments generated US$ 700 million in revenue, the highest value in history for the month. There was a rise of 47.5% over the result of January 2021.
The high invoicing reflected the appreciation of grain prices on the international market. The average price per bag exported last month was US$ 216, 67% above the average recorded in January last year.
Logistical bottlenecks influenced the decline in shipped volume. “We noticed a slight improvement in container supply, and there was a new record of shipments via breakbulk (sacks), which helped to improve the flow,” says Nicolas Rueda, president of Cecafé, in a note. “But finding room on ships is still a challenge.”
Rueda also recalls that Brazil entered the off-season of a not-so-productive cycle, hence the less availability of grains. The average price seen last month was the second-highest ever recorded for a single January. The previous record had been in January 2021 (US$ 272).
Currently, coffee’s trade value in the international market is increasing. However, values fluctuate due to concerns about the low global stock of the product and crop failure in important producers like Brazil and Colombia.
