Here is the ranking of the top commodities exported via containers from the East Coast of South America, specifically Brazil and the Plate region, during the first four months of 2024, along with a comparison to the same period in 2023. This data was compiled by the Business Intelligence team at Datamar:

Brazil

Meat products came up as the top export commodities shipped from Brazil via containers in the period from January to April 2024, totaling 213,207 TEUs. This represents an 8.4% increase compared to the same period last year. It was followed by wood, which saw a growth of 17.7%, and cotton, with a substantial increase of 283.5%.

With 142,619 TEUs or 37.1% more than in the same period last year, plastic was Brazil’s most-imported good in the first four months of this year. Reactors, boilers, and machines (+14%) and electrical materials (+29.6%) were next in line. See more below:

Plate

In the period from January to April 2024, meat stood out as Argentina’s top export commodity via containers, reaching 27,314 TEUs. This marks a 12.9% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Vegetable products and seafood, however, experienced declines of 27.6% and 28.3%, respectively.

During the first quarter of the year, Argentina saw declines in the import of its top three products via containers: vehicles, automobiles, and parts (-13.1%); reactors, boilers, and machines (-34.3%); and plastics (-22%). Below are details on other imported products:

Paraguay and Uruguay

Wood topped the list of the most exported products via containers from Paraguay and Uruguay in the period from January to April, showing an 11.8% increase compared to the same period in 2023. It was followed by meat, which experienced a slight decline of 5.8%, and animal products, which saw a notable increase of 9.6%. Here are details about the other exported products:

Motor cars and parts, with a volume 20.8% greater than in the first four months of 2023, top the list of imports via containers from Paraguay and Uruguay, followed by reactors, boilers, and machines (21%) and rubber (30.2%). More details are available below:
