CONAB: Inclement weather pushes grain harvest forecasts down further

The expectation of harvesting grains in Brazil in the 2020/21 cycle had another setback due to climatic problems that affected corn and bean crops.
The total harvest should reach 252.3 million tons, a reduction of 0.7% compared to the August projection and a 1.8% reduction compared to the previous harvest, disclosed CONAB (the national food supply company responsible for managing agricultural policies in the country) on September 9.
“This was the most difficult crop in the last 30 years. We had late rains at the beginning of planting, rains at harvest, drought, frost, and pests. Even so, we had record harvests in soy and rice,” stated the president of CONAB, William Ribeiro.
According to Ribeiro, the losses occurred mainly in second-crop corn and bean crops because of a prolonged drought associated with frosts in the central-southern region.
