Brazilian fertilizer imports are set to break a record in 2021, according to CONAB (the national supply company). From January to August, 24.8 million tons were imported, 17% more than in the same period in 2020. In 2019, in the same period, 18.9 million tons of inputs were purchased from abroad.

The input of imported nitrogen, one of the main fertilizers used for corn planting, went from 6.2 million tons in the first eight months of 2020 to 7.8 million tons now.

See the chart below for a comparison of Brazilian fertilizer imports in the first eight months of the last five years. Data are from DataLiner:

Capitalized Producer

“Due to the high prices of the main commodities, the capitalized producer can purchase inputs under better conditions. In addition, confirming this trend may be an indication for the possibility of increasing the planted area, especially with regard to corn,” he says the state-owned company.

The port of Paranaguá (PR) is the main entry point for these inputs. 7.4 million tons were unloaded until August. The ports of Santos (SP) and Rio Grande (RS) imported 5.3 million and 3.3 million tons, respectively.

The ports of Arco Norte total 5 million tons of imported fertilizers, especially the Itaqui (MA) terminal, with 1.9 million tons.
