The container ship Tokyo Bay collided with the ferry FB-30 in the Santos channel around 1:15 PM this Monday (16). The vessel, flagged under Liberia, measures 270.9 meters in length and 42.8 meters in width. The ferry was empty, and no one was injured. The freighter docked at the DP World Santos terminal.
In a statement, the Brazilian Navy, through the Port Authority of São Paulo (CPSP), reported that “during a maneuver to enter the Santos Port Canal, the merchant ship Tokyo Bay collided with the ferry FB-30, which was docked at a maintenance pier on the Left Bank in Guarujá.”
According to the Port Authority, “there are no reports of injuries or signs of water pollution, with the damage initially limited to minor damage to both vessels.”
The Port Authority also noted that “a team of CPSP experts was immediately sent to the accident site and to the involved merchant ship to gather evidence for the administrative inquiry that has been initiated, aiming to determine the circumstances and responsibilities for the incident.”
The Port Authority of Santos (APS) reported that it “verified” that, at 1:15 PM, the ship “deviated from the navigation channel and came close to shore, near the ferry crossing dock on the Guarujá side. The vessel was coming from the Port of Navegantes (SC) and docked at the private terminal (TUP) of DP World.”
According to APS, “the incident did not cause any disruption to navigation or impact port operations. The Brazilian Navy is responsible for investigating navigation incidents.”
The Secretariat of Environment, Infrastructure, and Logistics (Semil) of the State of São Paulo, through the Department of Waterways (DH), confirmed that the Tokyo Bay “collided with a ferry that was at the maintenance pier” during the maneuver at the entrance of the port canal.
Semil also reported that “there were no people on the vessel, so no injuries were recorded. The accident does not affect ferry operations. DH is assessing the material damage, and maritime authorities have been notified to investigate the case.”
A Tribuna report also contacted the Pilots of São Paulo and is awaiting more details about the incident.
