A Panama-flagged container ship was attacked in the Gulf of Guinea, an area known for pirate attacks.
The maritime security intelligence company Dryad Global reported that the attack on the vessel is still taking place, and a warship is already heading for the scene.
According to reports, the MSC Lucia container ship, built in 1985, was invaded by an unknown number of armed men. For the time being, details of the attack are still unclear. The vessel in question was attacked south of Nigeria and west of the Republic of Cameroon, about 86 nautical miles southwest of the Agbami Terminal in Nigeria.
It is not yet known whether the crew aboard the container ship is safe.
Vessels sailing in the area were advised to be careful when moving in the region in question, known for acts of piracy and sailor kidnappings.
At the same time, the Maritime Domain Awareness Trade (MDAT-GoG), a joint project of the UK and French navies, also reported that a ship was attacked in the same area. However, it is unclear whether this vessel would be the MSC Lucia, but MDAT-GoG confirmed that this hijacking was over and that the vessel and its crew were safe.
