Container Throughput at the Port of Santos Grows by Double Digits in August

Container throughput at the Port of Santos reached 456,500 TEU in August, up 12% year on year. The year-to-date results were also expressive, reaching 3.3 million TEU, the best mark for the period, 2.9% above the first eight months of 2021.
The flow of containers and agribusiness goods boosted the port’s global figures, leading it to a new record for the year, with 110.1 million tonnes, up 9.0% over the same period of the previous year.
The growth observed in August took the port sector by surprise, totaling 14.6 million tonnes, an increase of f 21.4% over August 2021, making it the best performance for the month.
Year to date, shipments totaled 80.3 million tonnes, an increase of 11.1% compared to the same period in 2021. In addition, landings totaled 29.8 million tonnes, an increase of 3.6%.
In August alone, shipments totaled 10.6 million tonnes, an increase of 31.0% YoY. Landings of imported goods reached 4.0 million tonnes, 1.6% more than in August of the year past.
In August, the top agricultural cargoes handled at the port were soybeans at 782.7 thousand tonnes (+328.75%), corn at 2.3 million tonnes (+25.2%), sugar at 2.5 million tonnes (+24.1%), bran in bulk at 831.2 thousand tonnes (+63.5%), and pulp at 810.3 thousand tonnes (+68.7%).
Year to date, the products that stood out the most in exports were pulp, with an expressive movement of 5.4 million tonnes, an increase of 61.2%; corn, with 6.4 million tonnes (+78.0%); soybeans, with 23.8 million tonnes (+9.9%); soybean meal in bulk, with 6.2 million tonnes (+32.0%); and animal meat, with 1.5 million tonnes (+31.8%). In turn, fertilizers stood out in imports, with 5.5 million tonnes (+13.1%).
In the first eight months of the year, 3,454 vessels passed through the port, a number 6.2% higher than that recorded in the same period last year.
Liquid bulk
Operations of liquid bulk cargo grew by 5.1% in the month to 1.6 million tonnes, driven by the increases in alcohol shipments (39.2%), fuel oil (24.1%), and caustic soda (24.3%). Year-to-date, the category reached 12.6 million tons, up 3.7%, the best mark for the period.
Solid bulk
Solid bulk shipments reached the mark of 7.4 million tons in August, a growth of 34.6%. The month’s highlights were corn, sugar, soybeans, soybean meal, pulp, and fertilizers. In the year, until August, the segment totals 56.8 million tonnes, up 12.6%, the best mark for the period.
Trade flow
The participation of Santos in the Brazilian trade flow in August was 28.9%. Of all foreign trade transactions involving the Port of Santos, 30.9% had China as a partner. São Paulo has the highest participation in commercial transactions abroad through the port (53.4%).
