Cookies and bread: Brazilian exports grow 25% in 2021

Brazilian cookies and bread export rates increased by 25% in 2021 compared to the previous year. More than 201 thousand tons of the products were exported, resulting in earnings of USD 245.5 million.
The Brazilian Association of Biscuit, Pasta, and Industrialized Bread & Cakes (Abimapi) released the data on the 28th.
The studies conducted by the association found that the significant increase in exports is related to the fact that consumers are opting for more affordable food options, with greater practicality and shelf life to consume at home.
The country’s financial situation was also crucial to attaining this result: people started consuming more as they can buy these products for relatively cheap.
The studies also found that the Brazilian currency’s depreciation in the international market contributed to the positive results seen, as the exchange rate deterioration makes the product cheaper for foreign consumers and facilitates exports.
“The exchange rate, as it is, favors exports, since the devalued Brazilian currency makes national products more accessible to the foreign market. This happens because exports are always traded in dollars. In addition, the pandemic also favored an increase in demand for products that are consumed indoors, as people spend more time at home”, explained the international director of ABIMAPI, Rodrigo Iglesias.
The study’s data indicate that the leading destination of these Brazilian-produced cookies and bread were the countries in the Middle East, Africa, and Venezuela. The African continent alone is responsible for almost 50% of exports.
“Over the last few years, we have seen a significant increase in the export of these products to Venezuela as the country’s demand for this type of food is much higher than Brazilian consumption. As a result, Venezuelans consume a lot of bread and cookies per capita,” Rodrigo Iglesias added.

For the first time, the category of industrialized bread and cakes exceeded 100,000 tons of exports in a single year.
Altogether, the industry handled USD 112.3 million of exported products, resulting from the sale of 114 thousand tons of products, totaling a 30% increase in 2021 compared to the previous year.
Among the main products shipped are Panettone, which exceeded the margin of US$ 20 million and 6 thousand tons, and loaves of bread, one of the items that grew the most during the pandemic.
In 2019, Brazil exported 155 tons of loaves of bread and, in 2021, 2,500 tons, an increase of almost 20 times in just two years.
Bauducco, for example, reports a historical record in terms of the revenue of its exports in 2021. Sales of Panettone grew 20% to the United States and, on average, 15% to other markets. The sliced bread manufactured by the company, on the other hand, saw a 2,000% increase in sales in 2021.
