Costa Filho announces BRL 400 million in funds to the Port of Santos

Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filho, announced on October 24 that the federal government will invest R$ 400 million in road infrastructure projects at the Port of Santos (Sao Paulo). The allocation of funds was agreed upon in a meeting with the Governor of Sao Paulo, Tarcisio de Freitas. This measure aims to reduce traffic congestion on transportation routes for goods entering and exiting the port complex.
“We have agreed with Governor Tarcisio to invest in urban mobility, which will help improve transportation to the Port of Santos. We are investing R$ 400 million in improving the road access to facilitate cargo flow,” the minister stated during the 10th ATP (Association of Private Port Terminals) meeting in Brasilia.
According to Costa Filho, this fund injection is part of a three-pronged priority plan of the federal government in collaboration with the state of Sao Paulo for improving the Port of Santos.
In addition to investments to facilitate cargo flow at the port, the minister also mentioned the construction of the Santos-Guaruja tunnel, which is the major project under the New PAC (Growth Acceleration Program), and the model for the PPI (Partnerships for Investment Program) to execute dredging work in the port channel.
Improving road access to the port complex has been a long-standing demand from the APS (Port Authority of Santos). In an event held in October, the president of the port authority, Anderson Pomini, emphasized that expanding the Anchieta highway, which connects Sao Paulo to Baixada Santista, should be a top priority of Tarcisio’s administration.
He noted that 70% of the port’s throughput relies on the highway, which hasn’t kept up with the growth of the Santos port complex, becoming a bottleneck in the flow of goods.
“Our route responsible for carrying 70% of the port traffic is already at capacity, which is the Anchieta highway. The highway was planned 80 years ago when we transported 4 million tons per year. After 80 years, we have the same highway handling 164 million tons per year,” Pomini stated.
The minister did not specify whether the funds will be solely allocated to expanding the Anchieta route. Costa Filho mentioned that the federal government is still waiting for the state government to work with the port authority in identifying the access points that will benefit from this funding.
“In the near future, we will discuss this strategic project with Governor Tarcisio and Director Pomini to determine how these resources will be utilized to improve mobility. The state government is coordinating with the federal delegation, both representatives and senators, to secure these federal funds and allocate them to the Port of Santos,” Costa Filho explained.
