Cotton exports by Tecon Salvador grow 156% this year

Cotton lint exports through Tecon Salvador, Wilson Sons’ container terminal, grew by 156% between January and November. A total of 1,156 containers carrying 28,900 tons of the agricultural commodity were shipped, with a significant highlight in November, reaching 421 units (10,525 tons), the highest monthly volume of the period. Throughout the year 2022, 451 containers were exported with the Brazilian product.

Brazil is currently the world’s second-largest exporter of cotton, which can be traded in seeds, meal, and lint. Through Salvador, cotton lint produced in the Cerrado region, located in the North-Northeast of Brazil, known as Matopiba, comprising the states of Bahia, Maranhão, Piauí, and Tocantins, was exported to major markets in Asia (Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, and Vietnam) and Eurasia (Turkey).

As a business unit of Wilson Sons, the largest port and maritime logistics operator in the Brazilian market, Tecon Salvador and its logistics center have the infrastructure to handle the cargo, having obtained certification from the Responsible Brazilian Cotton Program for Retroport Terminals (ABR-Log). The socio-environmental seal enables operations at the Logistics Center, endorsing the quality of cotton preparation for export through a process called “stowage,” which involves placing the cargo inside containers without damage or contamination. Issued by the Brazilian Cotton Producers Association (Abrapa) and the National Exporters Association (Anea), the certification is part of Cotton Brazil, an initiative to promote Brazilian fiber in the international market.

Guilherme Dutra, commercial director of the Bahian container terminal, explains that the logistics center is only 15 km from the Port of Salvador and operates as a Special Area for Customs Export Clearance (Redex). “It is a space where exporters have special handling and storage services according to each one’s logistical needs. The cargo undergoes the entire customs clearance process, carried out through remote inspection by the competent authority, offering agility and security to the industries,” he details.
