Cotton exports set a new record in the first quarter

According to ANEA (the national association of cotton exporters), Brazilian cotton exports have just set a new record. The first quarter of 2021 was the best in the history of boll shipments, with 731,400 tons shipped. In the same period in 2020, Brazil exported 619,500 tons.
“This scenario balances out the export shipments, unlike in previous years when 70% was shipped in the second half of the year”, explains the president of ANEA, Henrique Snitcovski.
According to Snitcovski, the current season will probably end with 54% of the bolls exported in the second half of 2020 and 46% in the first half of 2021, which confirms Brazil’s ability to supply the international market over 12 months.
Snitcovski points out that in addition to the quality of the national fiber, one of the main factors contributing to the performance in consumer markets is precisely the regularity of supply. “This regularity results in increased credibility and security; textile industries know they can count on Brazilian cotton for their production,” he highlights.
The association estimates that in the crop year 2020/2021 (July 2020 to June 2021), cotton boll exports are expected to exceed 2.3 million tons. This volume exported represents an increase of about 21% compared to the 2019/2020 crop year – when Brazil shipped 1,910 million tons – consolidating the country as the world’s second-largest global exporter of cotton, behind only the United States.
In a previous publication, DatamarNews pointed out that the US-China trade war favors Brazilian cotton exports. The Asian country blocked American imports and increased its purchase of Brazilian material.
Datamar’s data also prove the paradigm shift in the seasonality of exports, which are traditionally up in the second half of the year.

Characteristics such as the quality of the product offered in the international market, the level of competitiveness, and the favorable price continue to help Brazil consolidate itself in the main markets for the export of this commodity, according to Snitcovski.
“The 2020 harvest season is driving the growth of Brazilian cotton exports and, consequently, increasing its presence in different consumer markets, with a strong representation in global trade,” he says.
China, the world’s largest importer of cotton, continues to be the leading destination for Brazilian exports. Other leading destinations for Brazilian cotton are Vietnam, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkey, and Indonesia.
The combination of a favorable climate, excellent planting window, suitable varieties, and continuous investments in crops has led to significant gains in productivity and fiber quality. ANEA also recalls that Brazil produces on a large scale, incorporating technology and socio-environmental responsibility.
