Crea-SP president takes first step in underwater tunnel partnership with Port of Santos

The president of the Regional Council of Engineering and Agronomy of the State of São Paulo (Crea-SP), Vinicius Marchese, promoted a technical assessment visit to the Port of Santos over the weekend during the 2nd National Symposium on Smart Cities as part of the first action taken within the scope of the partnership signed between the Port Authority of Santos to provide technical support for the construction of the Santos-Guarujá underwater tunnel.
The team crossed the navigation channel of the Port of Santos from the ferry crossing to the entrance of the Port. Marchese explained that they crossed over the stretch allocated for the construction of the tunnel, near Avenida Siqueira de Campos, in Santos, to Rua Guilherme Ginle in Guarujá.
In the report presented in February on the logistics system of the State of São Paulo, this point had been marked as ‘Alternative E’ of the project. The order of identification in the document did not indicate the quality or relevance of the available options. This was evident to the extent that the studies indicated that the underwater tunnel is indeed the best alternative and that the section designated as ‘Alternative E’ was the most suitable.
The engineer also highlighted that the project follows the latest trends in transportation planning, including the segmentation of cargo traffic for both urban and passing environments. “It draws inspiration from the world’s largest underwater tunnel, currently under construction. Once completed, it will stretch 18 km, linking Denmark and Germany beneath the Baltic Sea. Such an endeavor is unprecedented in Brazil and will undoubtedly revolutionize our current engineering practices.”
The president of Crea-SP further elucidated that the partnership with APS, established through a cooperation agreement signed in July, “encompasses technical assistance to make the tunnel feasible.” “The recent technical visit served as an initial step in this collaborative effort, open to professionals in the technology sector. It provides them with an opportunity to engage with a site predominantly managed by engineering. In this way, we are nurturing professionals already working in the field and those aspiring to do so.”
Within the context of the symposium’s theme of smart cities, Marchese emphasized that the integration of the Port of Santos and the submerged tunnel aligns with the core principles of smart cities by impacting the Baixada Santista Metropolitan Region.
“The objective is to enhance the lives of the local population, promoting higher transportation quality, reducing air pollution by curbing greenhouse gas emissions generated by congested traffic, and facilitating overall traffic flow. Naturally, this initiative will stimulate job creation, given that a project of this magnitude demands a substantial workforce, thereby positively influencing the regional economy.”
Regarding the logistical bottlenecks identified in a study presented by Crea-SP this year, the engineer recalled that “the report analyzing the state’s logistics and transport system identified Santos and Baixada Santista as pivotal points. With the APS partnership in place, we are reinforcing our commitment to contribute technical expertise and make our professional team available.”
Highlighting the significance of the Port of Santos for the nation’s economy, Marchese underscored that the underwater tunnel represents one of the potential access solutions. “Currently, 30% of Brazil’s exports and imports flow through the Port. It stands as a colossal structure serving the entire country, both in logistical and economic terms. Like any engineering structure, it necessitates updates to accommodate the escalating demand. The submerged tunnel emerges as one of the feasible solutions for this purpose.”
Symposium
The technical visit to the Port of Santos constituted a segment of the program for the 2nd National Symposium on Smart Cities, held over Friday and Saturday at the Ponta da Praia convention center in Santos. On this occasion, Crea-SP members presented a technical report to vice-governor Felício Ramuth (PSD) outlining technological solutions for municipalities. Among the attendees at the event in Santos was also the state secretary for Government and Institutional Relations, Gilberto Kassab.
“Leveraging the technical knowledge of professionals in Engineering, Agronomy, and Geosciences, we have the capacity to address major urban challenges and propose projects with a positive impact on society,” asserted Vinicius Marchese, President of Crea-SP.
