Cubo Maritime & Port, an innovation hub for the maritime and port sector in Latin America, created by Cubo Itaú, Hidrovias do Brasil, Açu Port, and Wilson Sons, has announced a new international partnership with the Port Innovators Network (PIN). PIN, which includes the ports of Hamburg (Germany), Valencia (Spain), and Halifax (Canada), aims to drive innovation in the global port ecosystem by connecting communities to share ideas, project results, experiences, methodologies, and best practices.
This is not the hub’s first international partnership. In 2023, Cubo Maritime & Port established cooperation with PIER71, a maritime port hub in Singapore, home to one of the world’s largest and most modern ports. PIER71’s programs have impacted over 100 startups from various countries. As part of this cooperation, Desmond Tay from the Port of Singapore (MPA) provided content on smart ports and technological applications in Singapore to the community. Additionally, Cubo Maritime & Port startups participated in PIER71 programs in Singapore, while Singaporean startups took action in Brazil.
Over the past two years, Cubo Maritime & Port has seen significant advances by technological entrepreneurs. The hub currently hosts 24 startups, which collectively earned R$119 million in 2023, up from R$86 million the previous year, marking a growth of nearly 40%, according to data collected for Selo Cubo.
In addition to fostering “shiptechs,” the hub aims to help Brazil overcome historical logistical bottlenecks, benefiting foreign trade and the national economy. The new international cooperation aligns with the need to automate vessels and terminals, using technologies that enable safer reception of larger ships, facilitate communication management, and enhance operational predictability.
“Açu Port already uses many of these new technologies in its operations, being one of the only ports in the country to offer world-class infrastructure and total predictability for customers. The maritime port market still has many opportunities, and we aim to support its development through innovation. Over the last two years, we have incorporated several startup solutions that help us pursue innovation and sustainability in the port sector,” says Vinícius Patel, director of port administration at the port.
