Dairy exports drop in Chile in the first five months of 2023

Following a remarkable growth in 2022, dairy exports from Chile experienced a steady decline in the initial five months of 2023.
According to data from the governmental body Odepa, reproduced by the National Federation of Milk Producers (Fedeleche), dairy exports reached a total of US$ 102.4 million in May, reflecting an 8.8% decrease compared to the same period in 2022, denoting a reduction of US$ 9.9 million.
Regarding volume, dairy exports completed the fifth month of the year at 34,554 tonnes, with a reduction of 12.1%, or 34,554 tonnes. Moreover, May revealed a significant value drop (43.3%) in dairy exports, with volumes also going down 43.6% in volume compared to the previous year, totaling US$ 14.7 million and 5,022 tonnes, respectively.
The average price of dairy products exported in May stood at US$ 2,933 per tonne, undergoing a minor variation of 0.5% compared to 2022.
Key Export Destinations
Chile sold to a diverse range of countries in May. The United Arab Emirates secured the top position with a 21.5% share, amounting to US$ 22.0 million in exports. This indicates a remarkable 45.6% increase compared to 2022, with an additional US$ 6.9 million.
The United States ranked second with a concentration of 20.61% of the total, worth US$ 21.1 million. This represents a 15.2% increase, equivalent to an additional US$ 2.7 million compared to the previous year.
Mexico held the third position, accounting for 10.2% of the total, with exports worth US$ 10.4 million. However, a year-on-year comparison shows a decrease of 5.9%, resulting in a decline of $662,000.
Dairy exports to Colombia secured the fourth spot, representing 9.0% of the total. However, there was a significant drop of 58.4% compared to the previous year, with total exports amounting to US$ 9.3 million, a decrease of US$ 13.1 million.
Peru captured 8.0% of the total share, experiencing a decline of 6.0% compared to the previous year, with a total export value of US$ 8.2 million, reflecting a difference of US$ 529,000.
Product Performance
Dairy-based preparations emerged as the leading dairy export category in May, with a notable growth of 41.5%, totaling US$ 24.5 million. In terms of volume, shipments reached 5,743 tonnes, indicating a 15.2% increase compared to the same period in 2022.
Condensed milk secured the second position, a quantity worth US$ 22.7 million, signifying a 1.5% increase compared to the previous year. However, in terms of volume, exports witnessed a decline of 15.2% year on year to 6,444 tonnes.
In the realm of Chilean dairy exports, cheese emerged as the third most exported product, with shipments amounting to US$ 12.8 million. However, this figure represents a 6.6% drop compared to the same period in the previous year. The volume of cheese exports reached 2,672 tonnes, reflecting an 8.7% decrease compared to 2022.
In contrast, exports of whole milk powder witnessed a significant decline of 59.7%, with a total value of US$ 9.3 million. In terms of volume, there was a decrease of 56.6%, amounting to 2,481 tonnes.
Furthermore, shipments of infant formula experienced a decline of 9.4%, totaling US$ 9.3 million. Similarly, there was a corresponding 9.4% decrease in volume, with shipments amounting to 2,026 tonnes.
