DataLiner: Brazilian Exports and Imports Maintain Strong Pace in 2024

Data recently disclosed by Datamar’s Business Intelligence team reveals that Brazilian container exports saw a 22.1% increase in the first four months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, totaling some 1,021,263 TEUs shipped during this timeframe.

April alone saw a 21.5% increase in exports, marking the highest volume recorded in the past five years.

Among the most exported goods between January and April 2024, meat topped the list with an 8.4% increase over the same period in 2023. This was followed by wood, which saw a 17.7% rise, and cotton, which surged by an impressive 283.5%.

China remained the leading destination for Brazilian container exports, with volumes up 44.5% compared to the first four months of 2023. The United States and Mexico followed, with increases of 12% and 32.4%, respectively.

Brazilian container imports also experienced substantial growth from January to April, with 1,009,747 TEUs received, a 20.6% increase compared to the same period in 2023. In April specifically, imports rose by 20.5% year-on-year.

Plastics emerged as the most imported category, with volumes 37.1% higher than in the same period in 2023. This was followed by reactors, boilers, and machinery (up 14%) and electrical appliances (up 29.6%).

China was also the main source of imported goods for Brazil during this period, with volumes 45% higher than the same period in 2023. The United States followed with a 21.3% increase, while Germany saw a decline of 4.2%.

Argentina and Uruguay Trade Updates

Argentine container exports also saw growth in the first four months of 2024 compared to 2023, though at a much lower rate of 4.3%. However, imports into Argentina dropped significantly by 17.6% over the same period.

In contrast, Uruguay experienced a 7.7% increase in container exports in the first four months of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023, while imports grew by 5.3%.
