DataLiner: June data confirms record container imports in Brazil

Data recently released by Datamar’s Business Intelligence team on Brazilian container movement indicate that both imports and exports have had a very positive year.

In the first half of the year, Brazil exported 1,523,777 TEU, a volume 18.5% higher than in the same period last year. Considering only the month of June, the volume is 11.3% higher than in June 2023.

Here is a historical comparison of Brazilian container exports for the first half of 2024 and the same months in the previous three years, based on data from DataLiner, Datamar’s market intelligence platform:

China remains the main destination for Brazilian exports. In the first six months of the year, exports to China were 27.9% higher than in the same period of 2023, followed by the United States, where shipments grew by 9.8%.

Meat was Brazil’s most exported product category via containers in the first half of 2024, with a volume 9.1% higher than in the same period last year. Cotton exports saw a remarkable increase of 260.7% in the comparative period.

Imports

Brazilian imports via containers reached record levels: 1,529,646 TEU, 19.2% higher than in the first half of 2023. In June, Brazil imported 267,639 TEU, 26.7% above the June 2023 volumes, marking the highest monthly volume in the last ten years.

China is also the main origin of products imported by Brazil in 2024, with a volume 35.1% higher in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. The United States is next on the podium, with a volume 23.6% higher than a year ago.

The main product imported by Brazil between January and June 2024 was plastic, with a volume 32.8% higher than in the same period in 2023. Glass imports saw a significant increase, with volumes 334.6% higher than in the first half of 2023.

Plate Insights

Argentina recorded a 7.3% growth in container exports between January and June compared to the same period in 2023. In contrast, Argentine imports saw a sharp drop of 22.5% compared to the first half of 2023.

Uruguay shipped 10.2% more via containers in the first half of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. Imports, in turn, saw a slight increase of 0.6% in the first half of 2024 in the annual comparison.
