Brazil’s exports by TEU increased marginally by 1% to 1,679,859 TEUs in the first eight months of 2018, year-on-year. Brazil’s top two container ports – Santos and Paranaguá – saw little or no improvements in container shipments, at 636,124 and 205,303 TEUs respectively. The Port of Itajai saw a significant increase in exports, with growth of 36% to reach 73,519 TEU, year-on-year. On the other hand, three of the top 5 container ports – Navegantes, Rio Grande, and Itapoá – saw a slight reduction in activities, moving 5%, 4%, and 1% less containers respectively than the previous year.

Brazilian imports jumped up 13% to 1,534,637 TEUs between January to August, year-on-year. Santos imported 12% more containers to reach 643,576 TEUs, whilst at Paranaguá, Navegantes, Itapoá, and Manaus imports rose 19%, 10%, 14%, and 29% respectively. Most notably, Itajaí’s imports almost doubled, growing by 96% to 38,317 TEUs, year-on-year.

Plate ports saw a 4% rise to 438,244 TEUs in container exports in the first eight months of 2018, year-on-year. Buenos Aires is responsible for the bulk of the shipments, experiencing 9% growth to reach 226,011 TEUs. Montevideo had a slight downturn, exporting 8% less to 128,155 TEUs during the same period comparison. Rosario, San Antonio Este, and Bahia Blanca saw tremendous growth in exports, at 56%, 20% and 6% to 17,218, 12,726 and 11,637 TEUs respectively.

Argentina’s positive attitude towards foreign goods under the Macri government is reflected in the import figures, which show growth of 14% to 663,614 TEUs between January and August, year-on-year. Imports at Buenos Aires shot up by 20% to 454,935 TEUs over the same period comparison. Montevideo’s downward trend continued on the import side, down 8% to 132,812 TEUs, year-on-year. Zarate, Rosario, Ushuaia, and most notably, Bahia Blanca saw significant growth in imports, at 15%, 37%, 23%, and 218% respectively.
