Deeper draft ups Port of Paranagua grain flow capacity

The draft of the Port of Paranagua’s main access channel, as well as of the mooring berths of its Eastern Export Corridor, increased from 12.5 to 12.8 meters, informed the port authority Portos do Parana in a note. The new draft – the depth between the lowest point of a vessel’s keel and the waterline – expands the port’s operating capacity.
The public company expects an operating gain of 2,100 more tonnes of grain per ship. That is, 600 thousand additional tonnes in the year, considering an average of 285 ships, according to Portos do Paraná. Experts also foresee an increase in navigation safety for bulk carriers of an overall length (LOA) of up to 245 meters.
Dredging and rock blasting work in the port made the draft increase viable. With the removal of a submerged rock peak, the port’s access channel will reach a draft of 13.5 meters. Then, after another round of sediment removal, it shall reach 15.5 meters.
The bulk shipment system employed at Paranagua’s Eastern Export Corridor accounted for nearly 30% of all cargo throughput in the state of Paraná, which reached 57.5 million tonnes in 2021.
The public silo, nine terminals, and the three terminals explicitly designated for bulk shipment can all operate concurrently, allowing a single vessel to collect grain from several producers.
