Delay in issuing export certificates reflects lack of inspectors, says source

The delay in issuing certificates for export by auditors from the Federal Inspection Service (SIF), reflects the lack of professionals in the agricultural area, according to a source in the union sector. The source denied that a strike is in the works — at least for the time being.
Private sector executives told Valor that three slaughterhouses stopped slaughtering animals because of the slowdown. Also according to the union source, the Ministry of Agriculture has been warned for some time about the impact of the reduction in the number of active professionals. The number of agricultural inspectors fell 25% from 2010 to now.
“As some retire, others take on other tasks. Many who work in slaughterhouses needing constant inspection are doing periodic inspections by rotating through five establishments,” he says.
Hiring Budget
The Minister of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina, had already asked the Ministry of Finance for funding for new hires, but the response from the Ministry led by Paulo Guedes was negative. To Valor, the source reinforced that the SIF is not the only one being impacted at the moment. Inspectors working at the ports of Santos (SP) and Itajaí (SC) are also overloaded, as well as workers at VIGIAGRO (the international agricultural surveillance authority), who have redoubled their efforts to prevent African swine fever from entering the country through airports.
