Demolition Project Clears Site for APM Terminals Suape Expansion

APM Terminals Suape has successfully completed the demolition work on the site where its new port terminal will be established within the Governador Eraldo Gueiros Industrial Port Complex (Suape) in Pernambuco, Brazil.
The project, which began in February 2024, marked the largest demolition effort in the state’s history. The undertaking involved the removal of several buildings and infrastructures, setting the stage for the construction of a Private Use Terminal (TUP) adjacent to the Atlântico Sul Shipyard, from which APM Terminals purchased part of the land.
The land preparation, which started on January 26, 2024, and spanned 222 days, represents a significant milestone for the terminal. No incidents were reported throughout the process, underscoring the company’s commitment to safety and environmental care.
The operation required heavy machinery and specialized labor, with dedicated teams tasked with sorting and directing various types of waste materials. After repurposing or adequately disposing of 20,000 tonnes of debris, the site has been cleared, paving the way for the construction of the container yard—what will become the terminal’s core.
APM Terminals highlights that the future terminal will feature fully electric equipment and state-of-the-art technology, including remote-controlled operations, gated access with appointment systems, scanners, and world-class warehousing facilities.
With the demolition phase complete, the project now moves into the construction phase, and the companies awarded contracts for building the quay and other infrastructures will be selected in the coming weeks.
The establishment of APM Terminals Suape represents a major boost to port capacity in Pernambuco. It is expected to positively impact retail and industry across the Northeast of Brazil, enhancing shipping traffic and services that connect Pernambuco to various global ports. The terminal will deliver more efficient logistics solutions for users.
Herllon Rossato Rossdeutscher, Head of Business Integration at APM Terminals Suape, emphasized the project’s wide-reaching benefits, which are driven by pioneering sustainability initiatives that aim to stimulate the region’s socio-economic growth.
The company expects to create over 500 direct jobs and 2,000 indirect positions during the construction phase.
“We are now 200 days closer to opening the doors of a facility that will integrate and add value to the state of Pernambuco. We are eager to complete the next phases and begin operations by the second half of 2026,” Rossdeutscher added.
APM Terminals paid R$455 million for the site, contributing to a 40% reduction in Atlântico Sul Shipyard’s debt, which is undergoing judicial recovery.
The chart below reveals the performance of container exports and imports at the Port of Suape between January 2022 and August 2024. The development of the new APM Terminals asset in the region has the potential to further increase these figures in the coming years. The Suape TUP is set to unlock new business opportunities in the region. Additional logistics infrastructure, such as warehouses and cold storage facilities, is sure to come along, potentially impacting the real estate market and distribution networks.
Although not entirely carbon-neutral due to the diesel-powered trucks serving it, APM Terminals Suape has pledged to implement leading-edge sustainability initiatives. Beyond electrification, the terminal will feature a comprehensive environmental management system.
Plans include modeling groundwater flow to control pollution, treating wastewater, and managing other waste. Additionally, the terminal will have a proprietary 5G network, enabling real-time information flow for customers, available 24/7.
Another standout feature of the terminal is its use of remote-controlled Rubber-Tyred Gantry cranes (RTGs), which, according to the company, will enhance operational speed and safety and boost productivity through remote operations.
APM Terminals Suape is set to foster socio-economic development in the region, increase connectivity, and potentially attract new direct services to Asia and Europe.
These advantages are expected to create a positive ripple effect, reducing transportation costs and prices, enhancing exporters’ competitiveness, and lowering the costs of imported intermediate goods and consumer products.
With over half a century of history, APM Terminals develops and operates cutting-edge container terminals globally, consistently raising industry standards. The company, a division of A.P. Moller-Maersk, operates in 60 key locations across 33 countries and employs approximately 22,000 people. In 2023 alone, 27,000 ship calls were made at APM Terminals facilities worldwide.
