Despite difficulties, watermelon exports land new records in Brazil

Despite a series of logistical problems, watermelon exports reached a record in Brazil. On top of the low availability of containers and vessels. The first shipments of this fruit were hampered by planting delays and the difficulty of farmers to close contracts.
Still, farmers circumvented these problems and exporters managed to ship 118,000 tonnes of watermelon to other countries.
This figure represents a 9% increase compared to the previous harvest, according to the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea) of the State University of São Paulo.

Countries in Europe were the ones that bought the most Brazilian watermelon. As a result, revenue grew 19%, mobilizing US$ 58 million between August 2021 and March 2022 in transactions, nearly R$ 272 million. However, one should note that production costs have also grown, causing exporters’ profit margins to fall.
