Dredging works soon to resume on the Paraguay River
Feb, 07, 2019 Posted by datamarnewsWeek 201907
Dredging work on the Paraguay River is likely to start within two weeks after its temporary suspension in November last year.
Lack of dredging work has limited cargo movements on the waterway, especially in the northern part of the Paraguay River which has been affected by dry weather. Freight revenues are 35% below usual due to low draft limitations, in this case only 9 feet, according to the Center for Fluvial and Maritime Shipowners of Paraguay (Cafym). The current conditions are nothing out of the ordinary at this time of year as the river levels are lower, however questions are being asked about the dredging operation.
In the southern part of the hidrovia complex, which runs from Asunción to the confluence of the Paraná and Paraguay rivers, the maximum allowable draft is 14 feet. The new dredging work will run from the north to the south.
