The increase in raw material prices, the recovery of demand in China, the United States, and the European Union, and the resumption of economic activity will allow boost exports from Latin American countries by an average of 22% in 2021 compared to 2020, according to estimates by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC).
In this way, foreign sales would recover from the 10% drop registered in 2020, while imports – which last year registered a drop of 16% – would grow around 18% this year.
Increased Brazilian sales abroad may be explained by the 16% increase in prices. Volume is expected to grow by 6%. Purchases abroad are forecast to grow 10% in prices and 8% in volume.
ECLAC’s study entitled “The Paradox of the Recovery of Latin America and the Caribbean” also highlighted that in the first four months of 2021, values of exports increased 35% – 45%.
Likewise, in the first four months of the year, the value of intra-regional trade grew 19% compared to the same period in 2020, recovering values close to 2019.
