Energias do Brasil and TCP sign renewable energy contract

Energias do Brasil (EDP) signed a contract to provide renewable energy to the Container Terminal of Paranaguá (TCP), the largest in South America. The agreement provides for power supply under the I-REC (Renewable Energy Certificates) seal.

With this, TCP, whose average daily energy consumption is equivalent to that of a city of 156 thousand inhabitants, will avoid the emission of 10 thousand tonnes of carbon dioxide per year. Thomas Lima, the terminal’s commercial and institutional director, stated that TCP is committed to ESG principles to work sustainably, focusing on environmental protection.

“We are the primary passageway of refrigerated containers in Brazil; our energy needs are substantial, and all of this energy will now be renewable, strengthening this commitment at TCP,” the executive explains. In 2020, 42% of Brazil’s frozen chicken and poultry exports passed through the terminal in Paranaguá.

The I-REC has been used in Brazil since 2017 and has allowed electricity consumers to choose to use renewable energy based on evidence and traceability. EDP has been authorized since 2021 to issue and sell I-RECS, referring to the energy generated by one of its plants.

TCP has 3,624 connection points to place reefer containers, the largest number among Brazilian terminals. Each container of this type requires 7.5 kW to keep meat at temperatures that can reach -30C, depending on the type of commodities and export destination. Still, in 2022, the company plans to invest R$ 60 million in expanding this number by 50% to more than 5 thousand outlets.
