Fruit export company Frutas de Chile has confirmed that the entire shipment of cherries and other Chilean fruits sent to China aboard the vessel Maersk Saltoro will be destroyed, with the first container already disposed of. The process was carried out in accordance with established protocols following the completion of inspections on more than 1,300 containers by Chinese customs officials.
Iván Marambio, president of Frutas de Chile, stated, “We are currently in Nansha to continue monitoring developments regarding the shipment of cherries, blueberries, and other fruits aboard the Saltoro. The cargo inspection process has concluded, and the destruction of the first containers is now underway. The first container was destroyed yesterday in a procedure that took approximately two hours and was carried out in accordance with local authorities’ protocols.”
Regarding next steps, Marambio noted that additional sites still need to be designated for the destruction of the remaining fruit. He also emphasized that private inspectors are supporting the logistics process, enabling producers and exporters to assess their specific scenarios.
“Thanks to years of work and ongoing engagement with the Chinese market and its authorities, we have made significant progress in determining the final destination of this fruit,” Marambio added.
Frutas de Chile also highlighted that, from the outset, it has been in direct communication with Chinese customs representatives, Chile’s Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG), and the Chilean embassy in China. Additionally, meetings have been held with Chile’s consul and ProChile’s commercial attaché in the country.
