The president of the Espírito Santo Dockworkers Union, Cícero Benedito, reported to TV Gazeta that a dockworker was critically injured while assisting in loading granite onto a ship. The accident occurred when a metal drill piece, used in granite extraction and sometimes still attached to the blocks, fell on the worker’s head.
The injured worker was initially conscious and able to walk. He was promptly taken to a private hospital in Vitória. However, according to his family, his condition deteriorated, leading to a coma. As of Thursday (May 30) afternoon, he remained in serious condition. At around 5 p.m., brain death was confirmed.
Investigation into Accident Underway
The Espírito Santo Navy Captaincy (CPES) has announced that the accident’s causes and responsibilities will be investigated through an Administrative Inquiry into Navigation Accidents and Facts. The findings will be submitted to the Maritime Court for distribution and assessment and subsequently reported to the Navy Special Prosecutor’s Office for appropriate action.
Port Authority’s Response
Vports, the port authority responsible for the terminal, stated that it activated its aid operations immediately upon notification by the company overseeing the loading process. An ambulance and medical personnel were dispatched to transport the worker to the hospital.
Vports emphasized that it mandates compliance with legal and safety standards in contracts with its clients, partners, and suppliers. The authority provides an emergency response structure for handling such incidents when necessary. Efforts to contact the company responsible for the ship were made but have not yet yielded a response.
