On December 9, the European Union (EU) and Chile signed a deal on trade cooperation to promote investment and the exchange of goods. According to the EU, 99.9% of European exports will be tariff-free, potentially increasing the bloc’s exports to Chile by up to 4.5 billion euros.
Furthermore, the agreement guarantees better access for EU companies to Chilean public contracts and vice versa. The agreement also provides for human rights cooperation, investments in technology and innovation, and other measures not specified in the official EU statement.
According to the bloc, the EU and Chile had an Association Agreement in force, which caused trade between the country and the bloc to grow 163% between 2002 and 2021.
According to the statement, exports of goods from the EU to Chile grew 284% in the same period.
