European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen visited Baku, the capital city of Azerbaijan, on Monday, July 18, looking for alternative sources of natural gas for the European Union, which is trying to become less dependent on the resource coming from Russia.
The European Commission and the Azerbaijani government signed an agreement that provides for a doubling of natural gas imports by 2027, reports Euronews. The agreement seeks to bring Azerbaijani natural gas imports to at least 20 billion cubic meters a year within 15 years.
“Currently, with this new memorandum of understanding, we are opening a new chapter in our energy cooperation with Azerbaijan, a key partner in our efforts to move away from Russian fossil fuels,” said von der Leyen.
Azerbaijan is already increasing natural gas deliveries to the European Union from 8.1 billion cubic meters in 2021 to an expected 12 billion cubic meters in 2022, the Commission said.
