Exchange of information necessary in final stages to reopen beef market to China

The Minister of Agriculture, Tereza Cristina, denied that the diplomatic relationship between Brazil and China is strained and said that she does not see the continuation of the Chinese blockade on Brazilian beef, which has lasted for nearly two months, as a political act. She said that technical conversations with the Chinese continue and that the exchange of information necessary for the reopening of the market is in its final phase.
In an interview with CNN, the minister clarified that no Brazilian beef has entered China yet. Yesterday, the information circulated that cargo had been released in the port of Shanghai. Valor informed that there was only one request for the necessary documentation for the entry of the product into Chinese territory.
“We have containers arriving in China, but none have been released yet,” she said. Tereza Cristina did not stipulate a deadline for the reopening of exports but rejected the possibility that the embargo is a retaliation for the criticisms made by President Jair Bolsonaro about the Asian country.
The conversations led by the Ministry have not yet evolved into an outcome, but the minister hopes that the reopening will take place in the “very short term”. “We are advancing… we are now in the final phase of providing the information they were requesting,” she added.
