Exporters of ornamental stone are facing difficulties finding containers and shipping their cargo. According to Centrorochas (Brazilian Center of Ornamental Stone Exporters), the clearance process, which used to take 24 hours until November, now takes up to 72 hours, complicating operations.
Due to the delay in container clearance, exporters are often on the brink of the time limit for loading onto the ship. If they miss the ship, not only do they face complications with clients abroad, but they may also incur fines from the shipping company.
It’s not only the stone sector experiencing difficulties. Exporters of coffee and black pepper are also struggling to transport their goods. According to Centrorochas, many companies are attempting to switch from Maersk, which holds the majority of contracts in the sector, to MSC. Although MSC has available equipment, it is giving priority to coffee and pepper, which are perishable.
The column has learned that cargo movement in December is high at the Vila Velha port terminal, operated by Log-In. Given the situation, the operation of cargoes and, consequently, containers is under pressure. Log-In and Maersk are negotiating a solution.
