Exports: Brazil buys 36% of Paraguay shipments

Between January and July 2022, exports of companies based in Paraguay reached clients in 136 countries, invoking earnings of US$5.8 billion. Data from the country’s Ministry of Finance show Brazil (36%) and Argentina (24.9%) as the primary buyers. Added to Uruguay, Mercosur represents 63.1% of sales to the foreign market.
In addition to Brazil and Argentina, the “Top 5” customers of Paraguay include Chile (8.8%), Russia (3.8%), and the United States (2.5%). The most exported products were soybeans (18%), electricity (14%), chilled beef (9%), frozen beef (9%), soy flour (8%), soybean oil (7% ), corn (4%) and rice (3%).
As for Paraguay’s imports in the first seven months of 2022, transactions neared US$ 8.9 billion (R$ 46 billion), with a deficit of US$ 3.1 billion (R$ 15.6 billion). Foreign purchases rose 27% compared to last year, while sales fell 8.5%.
China (30.9%), Brazil (22.4%), Argentina (8.4%), the United States (7.5%), and India (2.7%) lead the list of 141 countries from which Paraguay purchased items such as fuel (14%), telephone equipment (9%), vehicles for transporting people (4%), agricultural and similar machinery (3%), insecticides (2%) and tires (2%).
The figures for January to July are similar to the ones seen in previous years, with Brazil, Argentina, and Chile predominating among export destinations; and China, Brazil, and Argentina on the podium of biggest suppliers. The main route of entry and exit of products is the waterway of the Paraná and Paraguay rivers.
