Exports through the Eastern Corridor of the Port of Paranaguá (Corex) totaled 11,100,407 tons from January to June 2023. The increase is 17.8% compared to the first six months of 2022, when 9,420,561 tons were handled. The volume is the highest moved in a single semester in 50 years, since the inauguration in 1973.
The director-president of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia, highlights the productivity in the shipment of grains in a single semester. “There was a significant increase in shipments of all Corex products. Soybean, especially, recorded a 22.4% increase in the semester (from 5,327,831 to 6,526,220 tons) and boosted the overall numbers, ”he says.
Of the entire volume shipped by Corex in the first half of this year, soybeans accounted for 58.7% of the total. Next, soybean meal appears with a participation of 23.6% (2,629,108 tons), followed by corn, with 17.2% (1,914,439 tons), and wheat, with 0.2% (30,640 tons).
In June alone, 2,085,879 tons of grain were handled. In the year-on-year comparison, the volume is 20.7% higher than the 1,727,400 tons shipped for export in the same month in 2022.
The average berthing time in the three berths in the corridor reduced from 2.84 days in June last year to 2.35 days in the same period this year. The average shipment productivity rose from 817.14 tons/hour to 1,088.67 tons/hour in the same period.
RECORD BERTHS – Shipments from the East Export Corridor of the Port of Paranaguá are carried out by three exclusive berths: 212, 213 and 214. There were 177 ships loaded in the first half of 2023, compared to 163 from January to June of the previous year.
The berth that produced the most shipments was 213, with 4,680,465 tons of cargo, on 74 ships. In the complex, public silos (vertical and horizontal) are interconnected by conveyor belts, operated by members of the Association of Port Operators in the Export Corridor (AOCEP); AGTL; Cargill; Cimbesul; South Center; I cook; Coamo II; Cotriguaçu; Interalli; Louis Dreyfus; and Rock.
The most expressive handling volumes occurred in the second quarter of 2023. In January, there were 1,240,560 tons; in February, 1,530,130 tons; in March, 1,913,484 tons; in April, 1,762,599 tons; in May, 2,567,755 tons; and in June, 2,085,879 tons.
The second half also saw a new record at Corex’s berth 213. The mark was surpassed in a shipment carried out from the 15th to the 16th of July, when 62,000 tons of soybeans were loaded onto the ship Yiannis B in a 24-hour period, operated by Rocha. The previous 24-hour record was 57,193 tonnes in 2019.
GENERAL MOVEMENT WITH RECORD – The performance of exports through the East Corridor adds to another milestone this year. In the first half, shipments and landings made by the two terminals, Paranaguá and Antonina reached 30,898,006 tons, an increase of 6% compared to the same period of 2022 (with 29,013,459 tons).
Specifically in June, between imports and exports, 5,677,557 tons of cargo passed through the Paranaguá and Antonina terminals in the 30 days. Compared to June last year, which registered 3,181,077 tons, the increase was 12%.
The performance in the first six months helped Paraná reach the record for exports in the first semester and reinforces the positive expectation for the second semester, according to the assessment of directors of the public company Portos do Paraná. June registered the fourth consecutive monthly increase – March, April and May also had an increase in volumes.
