Exports of Brazilian Cosmetics and Personal Hygiene products reach US$ 1.4 billion in 2021

The trade balance figures for the Brazilian Personal Hygiene, Perfumery and Cosmetics (HPPC) sector surprised by reaching US$ 1.4 billion in 2021, an increase of 16.2% over 2020 when it was US$ 1.2 billion. The data reinforces the competitive potential of the national HPPC industry, consolidating its position in international commercial transactions.
The total value of HPPC exports accounted for US$700 million in 2021, an increase of 14.9% over the previous year (US$609.3 million). December was decisive in leading to a surplus, for the second consecutive year, of US$ 11.6 million in the trade balance after ten years with a deficit.
“We were positively surprised as the balance remained in deficit for most of the year. Then, however, exports started increasing from August onwards, especially in December, which allowed us to reach a surplus,” says João Carlos Basilio, president of the Brazilian Association of Personal Hygiene, Perfumery, and Cosmetics Industry (ABIHPEC).
Haircare products have taken the lead in terms of exports in recent years. In December 2021, the export of these items totaled US$ 17.8 million. Other leading products are soaps (US$14.8 million) and Oral Hygiene Products (US$7.3 million).
Brazil exported HPPC products to 173 countries in 2021. The main trading partners in Latin America are its neighbors, led by Argentina. However, the increase in exports to other countries in the region, such as Chile and Mexico, has drawn attention.
In the case of imports, France and China lead the list of 75 countries that sell products to the Brazilian market. The most imported products in December were high value-added items, such as Skin Creams/Protectors/Tanners (US$7.5 million) and Fragrances (US$7.3 million), as well as Oral Hygiene Products (US$7.7 million).
A curiosity is that the Oral Hygiene category appears in the top positions in the list of exports and imports. This is because the purchase of toothbrushes drives imports in this category although Brazil exports other items, especially toothpaste.
In the period January-December 2021, imports from the HPPC sector reached US$688.4 million, an increase of 17.5% compared to the same period of the previous year (US$585.9 million).
