The exports of footwear components have yielded a sum of US$ 410.5 million last year, up 22% compared to exports in 2020 and 9% above 2019’s records. The data was elaborated by the “Brazilian Association of Footwear and Leather Artificacts” (Assintecal).
Assintecal points out a myriad of macroeconomic factors that help explain the results observed last year, including the in transportation prices, which curbed Asian imports, especially to Latin American neighbors.
Luiz Ribas Júnior, manager of international markets at Assintecal, claims that, in addition to logistical costs, the lack of primary inputs in the international arena encouraged global footwear manufacturers to seek more Brazilian suppliers to meet their needs.
“Brazil’s performance in 2021 demonstrates how important components and chemicals are for the global footwear and leather industries, demonstrating that the domestic footwear market provides uncut solutions,” explains Ribas Júnior.
China was the top destination for Brazilian component exports (US$ 85.54 million, 6% more than in 2020 and 49% more than in 2019), followed by Argentina (US$ 52.14 million, 241% more than in 2020, and 157% more than in 2019), Mexico (US$ 7 million, a gain of 29% over 2020 and a decrease of 18% over 2019), and Colombia (US$ 5.3 million, an improvement of 58% over 2020 and 5% over 2019).
Other Latin American markets accounted for nearly half of all landings. “These markets, which rely on shoe production, encountered logistical issues when trying to import from China. As a result, Brazilian suppliers recognized the opportunity and yielded excellent results,” said Assintecal.
“The main challenge, to which Assintecal is trying to prepare its members, is being able to keep and enlarge this performance even after the international flow of inputs stabilizes and goes back to normal”, added Ribas Júnior.
The state of Rio Grande do Sul was the largest exporter of footwear components in the year, having generated an income of US$ 245 million, up 9% from 2020 and 5% less than 2019. Santa Catarina, Bahia, and São Paulo were also noteworthy in terms of exports of footwear components.
