Exports of furniture and mattresses stabilize in May
Aug, 01, 2023 Posted by Lillian SmoakWeek 202332
Exports of furniture and mattresses advanced in May 2023, resuming the volume lost after the drop in activity during the previous month. In April, the Brazilian furniture and mattresses industry registered a 14.7% drop in exports, with a value of US$ 59.1 million in exported products. This, after a very warm March, which advanced 40%.
In May, according to monitoring by Abimóvel (Brazilian Association of Furniture Industries), sales of Brazilian furniture and mattresses abroad stabilized again, totaling US$ 67.3 million: a recovery of 14% over the previous month, returning to levels similar to those of the third month of the year (US$ 69.2 million).
The good performance in March and May, however, was not enough to reverse the lower scenario in activity in the first five months of this year compared to the same period last year. Between January and May 2022, the Brazilian furniture and mattresses industry exported more than US$ 341.89 million. In the first five months of 2023, however, the export value was US$ 290.26 million, that is, a decline of 15.1%.

Furniture production recedes
The index accumulated in the last 12 months up to May fell by 16.3%. The amount is also lower than in the same period in 2021, the reference year for Brazilian exports in the sector, when US$ 349.57 million in furniture and mattresses were exported between January and May. The data are part of a survey by Iemi, based on official data from the Brazilian trade balance, for the Brazilian Furniture Sector Project.
While one of the factors that may justify such behavior is the sharp decline in the value of goods and services on the global stage, the volume of furniture and mattresses exported in 2023 also falls short of the results obtained in recent years. When considering the period from January to May, there is a regression in the total number of pieces exported by the national furniture industry year by year: 11.7 million in 2021; 9.4 million in 2022; and 7.8 million in 2023.
Despite the fluctuations, the national furniture industry continues with a positive trade balance and in line with established projections. Even after significant advances in furniture sector imports — which grew 3.6% from March to April and 43.5% in May — activity is still 1.4% below the amount imported between January and May of the year past and with a decrease of 17.9% in the last 12 months. With imported products maintaining a 2.6% share in apparent domestic consumption of furniture and mattresses throughout 2023.
