While cotton negotiations in the Brazilian market linger low, the pace of exports for the product is intense this month. Recent data from Secex reveals that within just 11 business days of March, Brazilian exports have surged to 125.03 thousand tonnes, marking a remarkable 65% increase compared to the entire March 2023 volume.
The current daily export average stands at 11.366 thousand tonnes, nearly quadrupling the figure recorded in March 2023, which was only 3.296 thousand tonnes. Remarkably, in the partial period of the 2022/23 crop (from August 2023 to March 2024), Brazil has already shipped 1.754 million tonnes, representing a significant 21.1% increase over the total exported during the entire 2021/22 season (from August 2022 to July 2023), which amounted to 1.45 million tonnes.
Most of the Brazilian cotton uses the Port of Santos as the gateway to the world. The chart below shows the volume of cotton exports from the Port of Santos, between January 2022 and January 2024. The data is from DataLiner.

Researchers at Cepea suggest that, driven by higher international prices, Brazilian stakeholders are prioritizing new negotiations with foreign markets, even encompassing fiber for future seasons.
