Week 202411

February 2024 was a remarkable month for the Brazilian cotton market. According to data from Secex (Secretariat of Foreign Trade), national exports of this vital product reached a record volume, notably driven by the pivotal role played by the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil’s largest producer.

Mato Grosso, renowned for its substantial contribution to Brazilian cotton output, did not disappoint in February. Holding a significant share of 65.23% of the total Brazilian cotton exports that month, the state maintained its prominent position. Figures reveal that out of the 258.05 thousand tonnes exported by Brazil in February, an impressive 168.31 thousand tonnes originated from Mato Grosso’s lands.

Although produced for the most part in Mato Gross, the majority of Brazilin cotton uses the Port of Santos as its gateway to the world. The following chart shows the export volume of cotton from the Port of Santos, between January 2022 and January 2024. The data is from DataLiner.

Despite achieving a nationwide record, Mato Grosso faced a slight setback compared to the previous month. Exports fell 1.86%, reflecting weakened imports from key consumer markets such as China and Bangladesh. These countries, which have traditionally purchased Brazilian fiber, saw a drop in demand, which had a direct impact on the state’s exports.

In the context of Mato Grosso’s cotton exports, China reaffirmed its position as the primary destination, importing 85.91 thousand tonnes in February. Vietnam ranked second, importing 34.84 thousand tonnes of fiber produced in Mato Grosso’s vast plantations. These numbers underscore the importance of established trade agreements and the diversification of trading partners as a fundamental strategy for the sector’s sustainability.
