The Northern Arc has been consolidating itself as a strategic route for the flow of Brazilian agricultural production, emphasizing soybean exports, the country’s main commodity. Data from the Logistics Bulletin of the National Supply Company (Conab) show that, in December 2024, the ports in the region accounted for 34.8% of national soybean exports, surpassing the 33.8% registered in 2023.
This growth reinforces the trend of diversifying logistics routes and highlights the importance of infrastructure investments to increase the competitiveness of Brazilian agribusiness in the international market.
The Northern Arc region, which includes states from the North and Northeast of Brazil above the 16°S parallel, has stood out for its proximity to international markets, reduced logistics costs, and operational efficiency.
Ports such as Itacoatiara (AM), Santarém (PA), Santana (AP), Barcarena/Vila do Conde (PA), and São Luís (MA) have been attracting growing cargo volumes, relieving pressure on traditional ports in the South and Southeast. In 2023, the ports of the Northern Arc represented 37.55% of national soybean and corn traffic, consolidating themselves as one of the country’s main logistics corridors.
The installed capacity of the region’s ports is currently 52 million tons, but ongoing projects are expected to increase this capacity to 100 million tons in the next five years. These infrastructure and logistics modernization investments are essential to meet the growing demand for the flow of Brazilian agricultural production, which continues to break records.
Strengthening the Northern Arc as a logistics route is seen as a strategic step for Brazil to maintain its position as one of the largest global players in agribusiness. The region offers competitive advantages, such as shorter distances to important markets, lower transportation costs, and greater agility in the flow of production. Furthermore, the diversification of routes contributes to logistical security, reducing dependence on a single export corridor.
Conab’s data reinforce the agricultural sector’s importance to the Brazilian economy and highlight the logistical challenges that need to be overcome to maintain the country’s competitiveness in the international market.
The growth of exports through the Northern Arc demonstrates the effectiveness of infrastructure investments. It signals a promising future path for Brazilian agribusiness, which continues to expand and seek new opportunities in the global landscape.
