According to the Brazilian fertilizer industry association ANDA, the Brazilian fertilizer market has seen an uptick in deliveries, with 3.42 million tonnes of fertilizers delivered in January 2023. This marks a 6.3% increase from the same period in 2022. Despite logistical challenges brought about by geopolitical crises, imports have continued to arrive and support the agribusiness sector.
The state of Mato Grosso took the lead in deliveries, accounting for 28.4% of the total with 973,000 tons, followed by Goiás (549,000), Paraná (357,000), Minas Gerais (335,000), and São Paulo (242,000).
On the production front, the country produced 565,000 tonnes of intermediate fertilizers in January 2023, down 9.3% from the same period last year when production reached 623,000 tons. Meanwhile, imports of intermediate fertilizers fell by 22.8% to 2.53 million tons in January 2023, compared to the same period in 2022.
The port of Paranaguá, which serves as the primary entry point for fertilizers, received 660,000 tons, representing a 26.1% decrease from the previous year when 899,000 tonnes were unloaded from vessels at the port. Nevertheless, the terminal accounted for 26.6% of the total imported.
