Even though fertilizer imports should see a 30% reduction by the end of 2022, they keep coming at a high rate in the ports of Paraná state. Recently, in just two days, the Fortenave Maritime Agency assisted four vessels carrying fertilizers simultaneously, two of which moored in the port of Paranaguá and the other two in Ponta do Félix, in Antonina.
These vessels brought 107,236 tonnes of raw materials from Jordan, Nigeria, Egypt, and China.
In addition, by the afternoon of the 22nd, eight ships were awaiting to dock and unload the product in Paranaguá and Antonina, while twelve other vessels were on their way to ports in the state, according to lineup information from the shipping agency.
Fertilizer market
Brazil went through an atypical year with a high volume of fertilizer imports. The measure was to ensure the supply of enough agricultural inputs to support the expansion of the crop area and avoid occasional shortages due to the war between Ukraine and Russia, both important suppliers.
By the end of the first half of the year, Brazil imported around 19.2 million tonnes of fertilizers, 20% more than in the same period of the previous year.
With large quantities of the product on hand, the rate of fertilizer imports slowed down. The Sindiadubos fertilizer union anticipates a 30% reduction in arrivals from October to December. The prospects were revealed in October at a Symposium in Curitiba.
