A 27-year-old Filipino crew member onboard a Marshall Islands-flagged ship, docked Thursday (4) in the Port of Santos, was diagnosed with malaria and admitted to Hospital Beneficência Portuguesa in Santos. The diagnosed case was first detected on the vessel Genco Picardy, which departed from Nigeria on June 20.
According to the attending physician, the man was weary and exhibited several symptoms. After confirming the malaria case, the medical team visited the ship anchored in Barra de Santos and tested all other crew members.
The Santos Port Authority (APS) notified health agencies, the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa), and the terminal where the ship was to dock. In addition to testing all individuals on board, the port authority ordered the vessel to be disinfected before docking.
The Ship
The Genco Picardy, registered under Identification Number 29086/2024, is a sugar bulk carrier sailing under the Marshall Islands flag. It departed from Nigeria, a country with a high incidence of malaria, and arrived at the Port of Santos on Thursday (4).
The ship was expected to unload sugar and then continue its journey. However, with the confirmed malaria case, it is unclear when the vessel will be allowed to leave the port.
