Workers who were fired from an outsourced engineering company that provided services to Hidrovias do Brasil, operating in the Port of Santos on the coast of São Paulo, held a protest in the port area on November 23. They demand payment of last month’s wages, benefits, and contract termination.
According to the president of the workers’ association for Cubatão and the surrounding region, Ronaldo Araújo Queiroz, around 250 employees were fired by the company Modo Potencial Engenharia on November 4th. They expected to receive their termination rights by November 11th, which did not happen until this Tuesday.
The workers provided services for Hidrovias do Brasil. Therefore, after the mass layoff, the employees decided to charge the company for the benefits due.
According to Queiroz, a meeting was held with the representative of Hidrovias do Brasil, who undertook to allocate approximately R$ 800,000 which would be transferred to Modo Potencial Engenharia, to the union that represents the workers.
However, according to Queiroz, the amount is not enough to pay off all the company’s debts with workers. The amount would only cover the payment of wages in arrears.
